Essential Albums – Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’

What's Going On Mobile Fidelity

One album that should be in every record enthusiast’s collection is Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece ‘What’s Going On’. Whilst the album was released close to 50 years ago, the themes of social upheaval, environmental concerns and employment issues remain just as relevant today.

Many would argue that ‘What’s Going On’ is not only some of Marvin Gaye’s finest work, but also one of the greatest albums of the 20th Century, if not all time – Rolling Stone magazine named the album the 6th best in music history. These plaudits are all the more influential given that the album almost didn’t get made. Berry Gordy, head of Motown records, described the title track as “the worst thing I ever heard in my life”.

Luckily, the single was released without Gordy’s knowledge and was a huge success. As a result, Gaye was told he could release a whole album where he had complete creative control, providing it was recorded within 30 days. The album was released on the 21st May 1971, becoming Motown and Gaye’s best-selling album to date (until the release of ‘Let’s Get It On’ in 1973).

There can be no denying that ‘What’s Going On’ is a hugely influential album that was drastically different to anything Motown had ever released before, spurring fellow artists on to up their game in terms of their lyrical content, arrangements and instrumentation.
