The Vinyl Adventure in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is famous for many things, birthplace of former prime minister Harold Wilson and world famous actor James Mason. Huddersfield once boasted the largest amount of rolls royce owners in the country many years ago. It is also the home to the original builders of the Aston Martin namely David Brown engineering. Although it is no longer built in Huddersfield the suffix DB in DB9 means we can still remember David Browns when we drive past the firms offices in Lockwood, Huddersfield.

The early 1900’s were famous for many things, it was also around this time that the 12″ record was made, vinyl dates back to the 1800’s but the 12″ record was introduced in 1903. It could play for about 3-4 minutes, later developments led to the world’s first commercially available long playing record (LP) in 1931, the materials and technology used all those years ago has not really changed that much. Placing a needle into a rotating groove may seem rather crude in the 21st century but sound quality wise many agree that vinyl will out perform most other music playback mediums. The 12″ LP is and has been the reference medium for optimum music playback for many thousands of audiophiles for decades. Even the turntables themselves have undergone massive changes, not necessarily improvements but changes for sure. If we think about the 1960’s as a good decade for vinyl we can also quite confidently say it was also a good decade for the turntables used to play vinyl on.

One of the most respected turntables from the 1960’s is still alive and being used today, namely the Garrard 301 and 401 proof that good engineering is timeless!
