1 review for MCRU No. 75 Fig. 8 Mains Power Lead

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

I recently converted from CD (hardly ever used!) to a Linn Akurate DS streamer and had several hundred CD’s ripped and put on a server .In the process I lost the high quality mains lead so ended up with a kettle lead I found in a box for the Linn DS.
I hunted around the internet and came across a couple of very positive reviews for the MCRU No.75 so at £95 and a 30 day return deal I decided to take a look. (I actually bought two No.75’s but ordered the wrong termination on one).
As you might expect, swopping the No.75 for the lead I found in a box was a revelation, so I won’t dwell on this for long. Suffice to say that all areas of the Linn DS presentation were substantially improved. So much so I decided to try all my (5) remaining mains cables with No.75’s. These cables were £240 each (serving my phono amp and preamp) and just shy of £500 serving the LP12 power supply and the power amp.
Having put his system together over a few years, I knew where the mains leads I was using had the most effect. Also, my vinyl system is very well known to me so changes were easy to hear. Most of my listening was vinyl but I also used some hirez via the DS.
First of I swopped the mains leads on the phono and preamp (burn in isn’t an issue as this kit is ‘on’ all the time so a 50 hour burn in only took a couple of days). What struck me immediately was the sense of ease and space – all the detail that previously was in the mix was still there but now came out of the mix and into its own space with a deeper and wider soundstage and with a greater sense of ease. This made the individual instruments more positive and dynamic, it wasn’t that I hadn’t heard some of this detail before, but now sounded more like an individual instrument or note!
So I changed the two £500 leads on the turntable and the power amp. Again the difference was pretty much similar to the preamps. The sense of ease and ‘air’ were striking. I don’t think there was any more detail but the presentation was strikingly more realistic regardless of genre, be it Classical, Rock or whatever.
The final swop was the 16amp No.75 to my distribution/filter block I can’t remember how much this cost but the whole thing was around £800. Again the differences and improvements in space weren’t subtle, such that the presentation had real depth and width.
When you open the parcel from MCRU what greets you is a beautifully made confidence inspiring product that doesn’t disappoint when it is plugged in. Easily outperforms my existing leads and I suspect will continue to improve as the newer leads have had a chance to burn in.
