Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds are proud to announce the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series, which begins with six album releases from the Contemporary Records catalog, celebrating 70 years of the legendary jazz label. The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world’s largest source for audiophile recordings.
Each title, originally engineered by Roy DuNann and/or Howard Holzer, features all-analog mastering from the original tapes by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman (himself a former employee of the label), as well as unsurpassed audiophile pressing on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, presented in a Stoughton Printing old-style tip-on jacket.
The series highlights gems from Contemporary’s extraordinary catalog and features artists who both defined and expanded the sound of West Coast jazz.

Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder (Blue Note Classic Series) – Blue Note Vinyl
Lee Morgan’s magnum opus The Sidewinder—recorded in 1963 and release in 1964—was both a comeback and a coronation. The prodigious trumpeter had debuted on Blue Note in 1956 at the age of 18, but personal problems in the early-60s forced him off the scene temporarily. His rebound recording turned out to be The Sidewinder, an assured and energetic set of 5 indelible Morgan originals featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins. The album became his biggest commercial success fueled by the irrepressible title track.

Ray Charles – Ray Charles – Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series Hybrid Mono SACD
Ray Charles’ self-titled 1957 album was one of the first handful of albums issued by Atlantic (and was later retitled Hallelujah I Love Her So). As AllMusic reviewer Bruce Elder notes, the album is weighted about three to one in favor of Charles’ own compositions, with the hits “Hallelujah I Love Her So” and the pounding, soaring “Ain’t That Love,” which opens the record, its raison d’etre.
Otis Redding – The Dock Of The Bay – Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series Hybrid Stereo SACD
The guts of the story are this: While on tour with the Bar-Kays in August 1967, Otis Redding’s popularity was rising, and he was inundated with fans at his hotel in downtown San Francisco. Looking for a retreat, he accepted rock concert impresario Bill Graham’s offer to stay at his houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. Inspired, Redding started writing the lines, “Sittin’ in the morning sun, I’ll be sittin’ when the evening comes” and the first verse of a song, under the abbreviated title “Dock of the Bay.”

Genesis’ seventh studio album was released in February 1976 on Charisma Records and was the first to feature drummer Phil Collins as lead vocalist after the departure of Peter Gabriel. The album was a critical and commercial success in the U.K. and U.S., reaching No. 3 and No. 31 respectively. A Trick Of The Tail was a landmark album for the band, and it still stands today as one of their best with classics such as “Dance On A Volcano” and “Squonk.”
John Coltrane – Crescent Acoustic Sounds Series – 180g Impulse Vinyl
Crescent is widely regarded as one of John Coltrane’s finest albums, featuring the talents of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. During 1964, John Coltrane spent the least amount of time in the recording studio of his entire career as a leader. It wasn’t until April 27th that he, along with Tyner, Garrison and Jones went to the familiar surroundings of Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio to record all the tracks that appear on Crescent. In a hint of things to come for the Classic Quartet, both Garrison and Jones are featured on extended solos on the album’s second side.
