Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson ā Very Tall ā Verve Records 180g Vinyl
Scott Yanow of AllMusic says in his 4-Star review of Very Tall: āThis first matchup on records between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson was so logical that it is surprising it did not occur five years earlier. Originally recorded for Verve and three decades later reissued on this audiophile CD by Mobile Fidelity, the quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include āOn Green Dolphin Street,ā āThe Work Song,ā āJohn Brownās Bodyā (a jam on āBattle Hymn of the Republicā) and āReunion Blues.ā Fortunately O.P. and Bags would meet up on records many times in the future (particularly during their Pablo years) but this first effort is a particularly strong set.ā

Otis Redding ā The Dock Of The Bay ā Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series Hybrid Stereo SACD
The guts of the story are this: While on tour with the Bar-Kays in August 1967, Otis Reddingās popularity was rising, and he was inundated with fans at his hotel in downtown San Francisco. Looking for a retreat, he accepted rock concert impresario Bill Grahamās offer to stay at his houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. Inspired, Redding started writing the lines, āSittinā in the morning sun, Iāll be sittinā when the evening comesā and the first verse of a song, under the abbreviated title āDock of the Bay.ā

Pharoah Sanders – Live – Theresa Records 180 Vinyl 2 LP Gatefold Sleeve
This album features Pharoah Sanders playing some no-nonsense tenor in a quartet with pianist John Hicks, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Sanders performs āItās Easy to Rememberā (in a style very reminiscent of early-ā60s John Coltrane), an original blues, and two of his compositions, including the passionate āYouāve Got to Have Freedom.ā
The musicianship is at a high level and, although Sanders does not shriek as much as one might hope (the Trane-ish influence was particularly strong during this relatively mellow period), he is in fine form. Review by Scott Yanow/AMG
