Even turntables costing £15,000 have them included, they provide power for the turntable which is usually 12V DC. They are cheap and do the job, sound quality wise though they can easily be bettered.
The improvements in sound quality that come from replacing the existing power plug with a regulated linear power supply can often be startling. The switch mode supply actually makes the rest of your system sound worse, replace it and hear what your hifi is truly capable of.
